Almost Rocky in Chicago at The Blackout Cabaret in Second City Theater

What do you do when life keeps knocking you down, and the only thing you’re good at is getting back up? In (Almost) Rocky, join Gary John Miller for a funny & heartfelt storytelling adventure that dives into the surprising sources of motivation we all crave. Born at the Edinburgh Fringe in Scotland, this intimate storytelling show makes its thoughtful return to Chicago, bringing personal tales and unique voices to the stage for a second American run.

Central to Gary’s journey is his father—a tough love champion who believed that “getting knocked down is just a part of the game” (a sentiment that sounds much more inspiring when you’re not the one). Growing up with degenerative hip dysplasia, Gary shares his wild ride through life, from an early stint in a body cast to his not-so-stellar college wrestling and football experiences, where he learned that sometimes the only thing harder than tackling an opponent is tackling your own limitations. Through humor and heartfelt reflection, Gary shows how pushing through pain taught him to find joy in the struggle and strength in the absurd. Join Gary on this unforgettable journey that celebrates the spirit of the underdog. (Almost) Rocky is a reminder that when life knocks you down, all you really want is to go the distance—and then sit down after!
