As a referee, it is my job to enforce the rules of the game and keep players in line. It is my job to maintain order and fairness, but sometimes I get a certain thrill from not doing so.
I love making controversial calls that cause havoc on the court or field. I love when players or coaches get so upset they start yelling at me, and I can feel the tension mounting. It is a feeling like no other, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. There are some referees who take their job too seriously and never make a bad call, no matter what. I don’t understand that at all. I want to be the referee that makes the call that decides a game. It’s a rush like no other, and it is that rush that keeps me coming back to the court.
I know what you’re thinking, this isn’t fair to the players. As a referee, I’m supposed to be unbiased and impartial, and I agree. But, I also think that sometimes it’s okay to let your biases shine through. This doesn’t mean I make every call in favor of one team or the other, but I like to keep the game interesting. I understand that my job comes with responsibility and I take that responsibility very seriously. I have a deep respect for the game and the players, and I know that my decisions will have an impact on the outcome of the game. I take that into consideration when I make a call, but I also know that it’s okay to let myself have a little fun sometimes.
So, to the referees out there who love blowing games – keep doing what you’re doing! Let your passion for the game show through your decisions and remember that there is nothing wrong with having a little fun.
